Chapter Twelve

Sage

Sage entered the kitchen, finding Constance already placing a plate of fresh bacon on the table. Straightening up with a smile at Sage’s approach. “Good morning, sweetheart.” Her voice was soft, and comforting, like a mother’s should be.

“Good morning,” Sage replied as she neared the table. “I wish you would have woken me; I could have helped.” Sage moved to the counter and reached for a tea bag, placing it in a mug before filling it with hot water from the kettle on the stove.

“You need the rest,” Constance said. “Besides, I’ve been cooking for these animals for a long time. It’s as easy as breathing.” She assured. “You must be hungry, though. Why don’t you go ahead and get started.”

“I’d still like to help, anyway I can. It’s the least I can do.” Sage said as she lifted her mug to her lips, taking a sip of the herbal tea.

Constance smiled at Sage’s words and placed her hand lightly on her shoulder. “Nonsense, sweetheart. Now sit down, I’ll get you a plate.” Constance turned and grabbed a plate filled with pancakes, placing it down on the table as Madison entered the kitchen. She offered no greeting, no smile, not even a grunt with her beeline to the coffeepot. “Good morning, honey.” Constance greeted her daughter.

“Uh,” Madison grumbled as she lifted the cup to her lips and took her place at the table. Sage smiled at the woman but kept silent as Mason entered the room. As he strode smoothly, his gaze locked with hers. He placed his hand on the top of her shoulder and leaned over, kissing the top of her head. Sage’s eyes moved to Madison as she stared at them. What was she thinking, Sage wondered.

“Ah, thank you,” Mason said to his mother as she handed him his coffee. “Morning.” He sat in his normal spot.

“Morning,” Sage replied as Constance placed a plate of eggs down.

Sage glanced at Madison, who sat with a small smirk on her face. What was with this woman? Sage asked herself as she pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Where is Rayan?” Constance asked. “She’s not still asleep, is she?”

“No,” Madison answered. “She had to be at the clinic early today, so left really early.” Madison snatched a piece of bacon, and her eyes shifted to Mason as he straightened up.

“She went to the clinic without telling me?” He growled.

“Relax, your watchdog was here and went with her. She dares not disobey alpha dog,” Madison continued. Sage remained silent, her attention to Mason as he glared at his sister.

Madison sighed as she sat back in her seat. “She’s safe, Mason. No need to get worked up.” Constance reassured her son as she placed her hand on his shoulder.

“What are your plans today, Sage?” Madison asked, pulling the conversation in a different direction.

“I honestly have no idea,” Sage answered.

Madison grinned. “Good. How about we hang out today? Get to know one another.”

“That would be wonderful,” Sage spoke with excitement in her voice.
