Chapter Twelve
Sage
Sage entered the kitchen, finding Constance already placing a plate of fresh bacon on the table. Straightening up with a smile at Sageâs approach. âGood morning, sweetheart.â Her voice was soft, and comforting, like a motherâs should be.
âGood morning,â Sage replied as she neared the table. âI wish you would have woken me; I could have helped.â Sage moved to the counter and reached for a tea bag, placing it in a mug before filling it with hot water from the kettle on the stove.
âYou need the rest,â Constance said. âBesides, Iâve been cooking for these animals for a long time. Itâs as easy as breathing.â She assured. âYou must be hungry, though. Why donât you go ahead and get started.â
âIâd still like to help, anyway I can. Itâs the least I can do.â Sage said as she lifted her mug to her lips, taking a sip of the herbal tea.
Constance smiled at Sageâs words and placed her hand lightly on her shoulder. âNonsense, sweetheart. Now sit down, Iâll get you a plate.â Constance turned and grabbed a plate filled with pancakes, placing it down on the table as Madison entered the kitchen. She offered no greeting, no smile, not even a grunt with her beeline to the coffeepot. âGood morning, honey.â Constance greeted her daughter.
âUh,â Madison grumbled as she lifted the cup to her lips and took her place at the table. Sage smiled at the woman but kept silent as Mason entered the room. As he strode smoothly, his gaze locked with hers. He placed his hand on the top of her shoulder and leaned over, kissing the top of her head. Sageâs eyes moved to Madison as she stared at them. What was she thinking, Sage wondered.
âAh, thank you,â Mason said to his mother as she handed him his coffee. âMorning.â He sat in his normal spot.
âMorning,â Sage replied as Constance placed a plate of eggs down.
Sage glanced at Madison, who sat with a small smirk on her face. What was with this woman? Sage asked herself as she pushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
âWhere is Rayan?â Constance asked. âSheâs not still asleep, is she?â
âNo,â Madison answered. âShe had to be at the clinic early today, so left really early.â Madison snatched a piece of bacon, and her eyes shifted to Mason as he straightened up.
âShe went to the clinic without telling me?â He growled.
âRelax, your watchdog was here and went with her. She dares not disobey alpha dog,â Madison continued. Sage remained silent, her attention to Mason as he glared at his sister.
Madison sighed as she sat back in her seat. âSheâs safe, Mason. No need to get worked up.â Constance reassured her son as she placed her hand on his shoulder.
âWhat are your plans today, Sage?â Madison asked, pulling the conversation in a different direction.
âI honestly have no idea,â Sage answered.
Madison grinned. âGood. How about we hang out today? Get to know one another.â
âThat would be wonderful,â Sage spoke with excitement in her voice.
